Does Foam It Green Have to be Covered by Drywall?

Q: Can spray foam be left exposed, or do I have to cover it?

A: This is a great question. When insulating a wall, the foam will be covered by drywall, but many people wonder if foam has to be covered in areas like the rim joists or a garage.

The short answer is that it depends on your local building codes.

Foam It Green is Class 1, ASTM E84 fire retardant foam and meets building code requirements for fire retardancy.

Depending on your local codes, it may need to be covered with a fire barrier, such as drywall or thermal barrier paint.

Foam It Green carries thermal barrier paint should you need it, but we recommend checking with local codes before buying anything extra.
